Advantages of Laser Welding

Laser welding is a new technology that combines the use of a high-powered laser with an electrical current to weld two metal pieces together. The laser is powered by a high-voltage power supply and focuses the beam on the welding area. Both the workpiece table and laser speed are controlled by a computer-aided manufacturing system, or CAM. This innovative welding process has numerous advantages, and is now widely used in construction and manufacturing.

The researchers performed to join two dissimilar materials and found that the laser welds produced martensite at a higher rate than the other two methods. The rapid cooling rate of the laser process led to the development of martensite in the welded area. The increased cooling rate was associated with an increase in the equiaxed zone in the weld bead, while the hardness value decreased with increasing welding energy.

A typical macro-view of a joint without filler is shown in Fig. 6. A sound joint with minimal distortion occurs when the laser beam reaches the joint. The base material consists of an aluminum matrix with B4C particles evenly dispersed. The resulting laser weld zone is composed of needle-like phases of B4C residues. The laser beam is then passed through the upper part, which heats the joint at the absorbing surface.

Diode lasers generate a wavelength of light that is more efficiently absorbed by all metals. In fact, these lasers can improve weld quality by 50 to 100 times. Diodes also provide precise control over the laser’s energy. As a result, they are used in many manufacturing processes. It is important to note that lasers can be extremely powerful, which increases the efficiency of the process. Laser welding can produce a high-quality weld without the need for extra electrical power.

Another important characteristic of laser beam welding is the way in which it melts materials. By using concentrated heat, the beam can join thick materials and produce incredibly narrow welds. The high-energy density of the laser beam makes it the preferred welding method for high-volume production. This type of welding is also capable of melting the edges of the joint. It can also produce very complex structures. With its many benefits, laser beam welding is a promising technology for manufacturers and engineers alike.
