Drainage Materia

Drainage Materia are a range of natural and man-made materials that aid in drainage. They can be used for a variety of outdoor situations, such as patios or garden areas.

CQC and CQA personnel should keep an eye out for (1) areas where wind-borne fines may be washing into the drainage layer, and (2) evidence of clogging of the drainage material by water accumulation in low lying areas.

Sand

Sand is one of the most common drainage materials used in construction projects. Its large particle size and washed composition allows it to better absorb and transport water, preventing soil compaction and promoting healthier plant growth. Homeowners also use sand to help with landscaping and gardening. Whether you’re using it to build French drains or improving garden soil, clear drainage sand will ensure proper water management in your yard and prevent pooling and erosion.

There are different types of sand available to meet specific needs. Builders sand, for instance, is typically angular in shape and can range from coarse to fine-grain sizes. Its angular shape helps create void spaces, facilitating water movement and promoting effective drainage. Builders sand is also stable and can withstand heavy loads, making it a great choice for construction applications.

Fill sand is another type of sand commonly used in construction and landscaping projects. This makes it better suited to situations where the soil must be kept moist, such as in an incubator.

While both perlite and vermiculite improve a soil’s ability to drain water, they are not interchangeable, as their different properties make them more or less appropriate for each situation. For example, while both will help retain water, perlite is better suited for dry situations because it can absorb and hold water within the tiny crevices of its pockmarked surface, while vermiculite, as described above, absorbs and holds it like a sponge.

Pebbles

Planters
