Three South Korean Electric Car Suppliers

EVs have fewer mechanical parts than traditional vehicles, but they contain sophisticated technology that can be difficult to source and mass-produce. Legislation like the IRA can help, but the key is investing in a more diverse supply chain and strengthening transparency along the way.

The best EV suppliers will have traceable, ethical supply chains. This will help them mitigate risks and meet their new product introduction goals (NPI) while reducing environmental impact.

1. BYD

BYD produces rechargeable batteries, electric motors, and semiconductor chips. It also operates the world’s largest EV manufacturing plant and offers energy storage systems for homes, businesses, and utility companies.

It has a long history of producing clean energy products, and is now the world’s largest supplier of batteries for EVs. Its headquarters are located in Shenzhen, China.

BYD has a long list of customers for its rechargeable batteries, including Huawei, Apple, vivo, and Xiaomi. The company electric car supplier is also involved in the development of monorail systems, such as those used on the Guang’an Metro and the Guilin Metro in China, Line 17 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and SkyRail Bahia in Mexico.

The company began life as a battery manufacturer, and when electric cars took off, it saw an opportunity to expand into vehicles. Its first models were Toyota lookalikes, but the firm soon realized it needed to offer something more distinctive. It was one of the first Chinese car manufacturers to hire a designer, and Wolfgang Egger (who had previously worked at Alfa Romeo and SEAT) gave its cars a distinct look.

2. LG

LG is a large South Korean electronics company that produces everything from TVs to smartphones to battery modules for electric cars. The company has nine production plants worldwide, including one in Michigan where it will supply batteries for Toyota EVs that are planned for future U.S. production.

The deal with Toyota is LG Energy Solution’s biggest supply agreement — outside of joint ventures — to date. LG is investing approximately $3 billion in its Michigan facility to meet the terms of the contract.

In addition to the battery modules, which have a 20GWh capacity, LG is also supplying the vehicle motors and inverters that will power EVs. The deal with Toyota is the first time LG has supplied these high-value parts.

The full name of LG stands for “Rak-hui (pronounced Lucky) Goldstar.” The company was established in 1947 as a chemical industrial corporation named Rak-hui Chemical Industrial Corp, then spun off and merged with another electronics company called Goldstar Co. Ltd in 1958 to become Rak-hui Goldstar. The company changed its name to LG Electronics in 1995.

3. LG Chem

LG Chem is the main maker of the ESS (Electric Storage System) that goes inside electric cars. They use Lithium nickel manganese cobalt NMC pouch cells, which makes them safer and longer-lasting. Their batteries incorporate a Battery Management System that monitors the cell voltage and temperature to reduce energy losses and prevent thermal runaway.

The company started out as a cosmetic manufacturer in 1947 and has grown into one of the most diversified chemical companies in Korea with an extensive business portfolio of Petrochemicals, IT and Electronic Materials, and Energy Solutions. They have a strong market position in their core areas and focus on future-oriented business.

Their petrochemicals include acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene, benzene and styrene-acrylonitrile resin (SAN). They also manufacture raw materials such as plasticizers, specialty additives, alcohols, and elastomers. In addition, they work to ensure the safety of their employees and the environment by reducing the number of hazardous chemicals in their products.

4. LG Display

LG Display Co electric car factory supplier Ltd manufactures flexible displays and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels. The Company designs displays for notebook computers, TVs, monitors, automotive displays and portable navigation devices. LG Display serves customers worldwide.

LG Commercial Display Solutions

At ISE 2015, LG is showing off their innovative business-to-business (B2B) display products that add efficiency for businesses such as hotels, schools and quick service restaurants. They’re showcasing their 105-inch ULTRA HD Signage display, webOS display solutions, a transparent display cooler door and more. The B2B lineup also includes their innovative Room Management System that enables TV devices to access useful information and control lighting, heating, air conditioning, curtains and more remotely from the bed.

5. Samsung

The world’s biggest car manufacturers are pushing hard toward releasing electric cars. It would not be surprising if some of their affiliates, like Samsung, also start to make their own EV. The tech giant’s various divisions already supply components to some of the leading EV makers.

For example, its battery affiliate Samsung SDI has a joint plant with Stellantis that will produce lithium-ion batteries for General Motors. Its battery technology is known for its high energy density, long lifespan and fast charging speed.

In addition, it is showing off sensor technologies for driver and occupant monitoring systems. These technologies can detect conditions like drowsiness and distraction to help prevent accidents and fatalities.

At IAA MOBILITY 2023, Samsung will showcase its processors and sensors optimized for premium in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) and autonomous driving systems. Its Exynos Auto V920 is a power-efficient chip for IVI systems, while its ISOCELL Auto sensors provide a wide range of rear- and surround-view cameras. The foundry business will also present its advanced process technologies that enable mass production of automotive semiconductors.
